Exploring music videos

Four very different music videos that would be beneficial to explore and compare would be

Blur is an alternative rock band formed in London in 1989. The group is represented as very 'jack the lad' and portray an image of an 'I don't care' attitude. It is full of popular representations of England - beer drinking, terraced housing, door to door salesman etc. People are dressed in formal and informal clothes to represent different people in all different walks of 'life' in society.

Beyonce's song 'single ladies' conveys the meaning that if a man like you enough he should marry you. The song represents women as being strong, powerful and dominant 'I'm not that kind of girl', the song communicates this meaning through the use all female dancers. The song falls into the pop genre as it provides a catchy sound track and lyrics. Beyonce admitting that her video took influence from choreographer Bob Fosse, as a similar dance was preformed on the 1960's television program 'the Ed Sullivan Show'.
Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller' is the number one music video of all time, the full version is a short horror film. It tells the story of a couple that go to the movies to watch a horror film, the girl gets scared and leaves then the horror film comes true under a full moon. He turns into a werewolf, other dead people come out and perform the famous 'Thriller' dance routine. The actors in the music video are dressed in typically scary costumes to go with the horror theme and also reflect the name of the music video. Michael Jackson's music does not belong to a certain genre it 'incorporates a wide variety of genres. Mainly R&B and Pop, Dance, Funk, Hard Rock (Dirty Diana), Rock, even Gospel and Soul (Man in the Mirror), Opera (Earth Song). Queen is part of the classic, rock genre. The song 'bohemian rhapsody' was one of the first music videos ever made, the videos importance being that the song features multi tracking; Freddie Mercury sang over him self in different harmonies meaning that the song would never be able to be performed live.
